Breaking the Margazhi Mould!
A look at the alternate format events that emerged this season
MadRasana: Redefining the Carnatic Music Experience
Carnatic music, the classical treasure of South India, finds a modern and innovative expression through MadRasana, a pioneering platform dedicated to presenting Indian classical arts in an intimate and immersive setting. Breaking away from conventional norms, MadRasana aims to forge a deeper connection between artists, art forms, and audiences by prioritizing overall production, aesthetics, and a steadfast focus on the purity of the art form.
Setting the stage for a unique auditory experience, MadRasana has embraced cutting-edge technology. As trailblazers, they were among the first globally to present a full Indian Carnatic concert in a binaural format, elevating the listening experience to new heights. In another groundbreaking initiative, they introduced a live audience to a studio setup, allowing attendees to enjoy performances with pristine audio quality through personalized headphones.
Understanding the diverse ways in which listeners consume Indian classical music, MadRasana introduced the innovative MadRasana Workout Series. Tailored for fitness enthusiasts, this series features Carnatic concerts curated with varying speeds and durations, providing a customizable soundtrack for workouts, from short sessions to full marathons.
The MadRasana Unplugged Series on their YouTube channel showcases young and talented artists performing in a studio environment, with high-quality 4K resolution videos and impeccable audio. This series not only highlights the richness of Carnatic music but also provides a platform for emerging talents.
An annual highlight is the MadRasana Festival, held during Chennai's December Music festival. Distinguishing itself by its unique venue—a movie theater—the festival maximizes the cinematic screen for immersive experiences. The audience enjoys a blend of MadRasana Unplugged videos and live performances, creating a world-class ambience and acoustics for Carnatic music enthusiasts.
MadRasana's commitment to pushing boundaries, embracing technology, and catering to diverse audience preferences reflects its dedication to preserving and promoting the timeless tradition of Carnatic music while creating new and exciting avenues for its appreciation. The MadRasana Festival will once again grace the MS Subbulakshmi Arangam located within the Asian College of Journalism, Taramani, just like last year.
Chennai Literature and Art Festival
Chennai Literature Festival took place on the 9th of December earlier this week where the potency of words intertwines with limitless creativity, serving as a vibrant platform celebrating the fusion of literary prowess and boundless imaginative expression. With a great lineup of people, the festival transcended storytelling boundaries to showcase captivating artistry that sparked the imagination. Attendees explored the magic where narratives came to life, and creativity knew no bounds. The event offered an unforgettable celebration of the written word and boundless artistic expression.
Art On terrace
Art on the Terrace, located in Besant Nagar, Chennai, has become a thriving space for artists seeking a platform for practice and performance. Founded by Bharatanatyam dancer Meera Krishanmurti and friends, the transformative art space has hosted diverse events, including concerts, workshops, poetry readings, dance performances, and theatre shows for three years.
The concept is rooted in Meera's recognition of the scarcity of accessible spaces for dancers and theatre artists. Open to all, the terrace operates without a selection process or rental fees. Artists can use the space for performances or practice sessions by reaching out via Facebook.
The terrace operates on a donation basis, promoting inclusivity in the arts. Artists of all ages, including renowned performers like Leela Samson, utilize the space, contributing to its vibrant atmosphere.
Designed for comfort and an informal ambience, the terrace features tiles, a shed, soft lighting, modas (low seating), and a carpet for the audience. Embracing nature, the absence of a background cloth and speakers enhance the homely setting.
During the Margazhi festival season, Art on the Terrace hosts shows, maintaining a low-key and intimate atmosphere. With plans for four programs this year, the initiative continues to provide a unique platform for artistic expression within the community.
